Things are coming into gear on the new GFF server

I have slowly been ironing out the small crinkles in the system that drives GFF. Lots of little things didn't work when I had just moved the site, but most functions seem to be OK now.

Just today I managed to get the Pix-upload to work, and now users can again upload their images to GFF.

Sending mail from the system still doesn't work, so a lot of the functions that rely on this, will not perform as expected. I am waiting for a reply from our hosting support department, and hope to fix that soon.

But for now it seems that GFF is running smoothly in most departments,

GFF now runs from a US server - with a few hiccups

OK, we're moved to a new and hopefully much less expensive server.

But, a few sections aren't working as anticipated. We on the other hand are working like madmen to get it fixed.

So if you get server errors or pages not found, don't worry too much. We're right on the tails of it.

OK, we have moved the first part of GFF. Now the rest is on its way.

GFF is killing me! Or rather GFF is costing me a small fortune. I thought it would be smart to move the database to another server to avoid problems, but unfortunately it seems that I may have obtained a stable service, but at the same time I have created a black hole into which I can throw money...

A site such as GFF draws a lot of traffic, and as you might know, traffic on the web costs money. We pay per gigabyte that travels in and out of our server, and GFF is by far the largest site we have - and has been an expensive site to run.

But these days it's simply killing me. We had some database trouble, and I moved the database to another - and less expensive server - but that means that I now both pay for the data going frm GFF to you - the readers - but also pay for the data that travel between the web server here in Denmark and the database server in the US.

And trust me: it's expensive!

So expensive that I have immediately started moving the whole site to the US to get the costs down.

That means another hiccup in the GFF server history and possible downtime due to moving the domain and getting the site to run properly on the new server. It's unfortunately no trivial job to move a site as GFF, which in many ways is non-standard and carries with it a lot of old junk code - made by myself back when I was less smart than I am now.

I have set the sails and started the move, and one of these days the site will shift servers. Hopefully you won't feel a thing, but most likely there will be lots of little bumps that I will have to iron out.

Have patience. We will be back in full bloom as soon as possible.
